Composable Checkout: Why Flexibility Isn't Optional Anymore
The checkout flow that works for an impulse purchase is completely wrong for a high-consideration B2B order. Most platforms make you pick one. You shouldn't have to.
A furniture brand came to us with a specific problem: their checkout worked perfectly for direct consumers buying ₹8,000 dining chairs. It fell apart completely for interior designers placing bulk orders worth ₹3-12 lakhs, who needed to attach a purchase order, enter their GST number, split payment across multiple invoices, and get a formal proforma before committing. These were their highest-value customers, and the checkout was driving them to send WhatsApp messages to the sales team instead of completing online.
A composable checkout solves this. A fixed checkout doesn't — no matter how many toggles you add.
What Composable Checkout Means
A composable checkout is a checkout flow assembled from independent, pluggable steps. Each step can be included or excluded, reordered, conditionally shown based on context, and configured independently. The checkout flow that a consumer sees when buying a single product can be completely different from the flow that a B2B buyer sees placing a bulk order — and both are assembled from the same underlying step library.
QuantumOS X3's composable checkout includes the following step types out of the box, each independently configurable:
- Identity steps: guest checkout, account creation, buyer group verification
- Address steps: delivery address, store pickup selection, delivery slot booking
- Business steps: GSTIN capture (with automatic GSTIN verification), purchase order attachment, company name and billing address
- Compliance steps: age verification for restricted products, terms acceptance, consent capture
- Payment steps: UPI, card, net banking, COD, NET terms, split payment, installment plans
- Loyalty steps: points redemption, coupon application, referral code entry
- Value-add steps: gift wrapping, order notes, delivery instructions
Conditional Step Logic
The power of composable checkout is in the conditions. Steps can be shown or hidden based on:
- Customer segment (consumer vs. B2B buyer vs. reseller)
- Cart composition (does the cart contain age-restricted products?)
- Order value (show installment options only above ₹10,000)
- Product category (show prescription upload step for pharmaceutical products)
- Sales channel (different checkout for the mobile app vs. the website vs. the WhatsApp flow)
These conditions are configured in the admin without code. The marketing team can adjust checkout logic for a specific promotion. The operations team can add a delivery slot step for a new express service. The B2B team can enable PO attachment for enterprise accounts. None of this requires a developer.
The B2B Checkout in Practice
For the furniture brand, the composable checkout solution was straightforward: create a B2B buyer group, configure a checkout flow for that group that includes GSTIN capture, PO attachment, proforma generation, and NET-30 payment terms. The consumer checkout remains unchanged. The B2B buyer gets a checkout that speaks their language.
Within a month of enabling the B2B checkout, the brand's enterprise order volume through the platform increased 340% — buyers who had been going through the WhatsApp sales team moved to self-serve. The sales team's time shifted from order intake to relationship management.
Checkout as Conversion Infrastructure
Every unnecessary step in checkout costs conversions. Every missing step — a business buyer who can't enter their GSTIN, a consumer who can't find the coupon field — also costs conversions. Composable checkout is the architecture that lets you optimize for both simultaneously, by giving each customer segment exactly what they need and nothing more.
The checkout is the last thing that stands between intent and revenue. It should be the most carefully designed part of your commerce stack, not an afterthought.
